Introduction
“EcoWin” is the Knowledge Hub run by the center for the Development of Eco-efficient Water Infrastructure in Asia and the Pacific, as one of the initiatives of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).
This virtual knowledge hub is established in February 2009 to provide countries with following services;
- Play a role as a knowledge hub in Asia and the Pacific region to promote eco efficient approach for water infrastructure
- Produce more value while using natural resource efficiently and effectively in terms of water infrastructure
- Identify and reduce environmental impacts and wastes across the stages of life cycle of water infrastructure
- Avoid or minimize the creation of waste and pollution related to water infrastructure
- Provide the concepts, knowledge, skills, experiences and good practices on eco-efficient water infrastructure which can be shared, used and replicated among countries
- Promote 5 R: Re-think policy planning, Re-design products and engineering process, Re-integrate with existing strategies, Re-cooperate with markets, and Re-educate on eco-efficient water infrastructure
- Cooperate with countries, regional organizations, research institutes, and civil society
Functions
- The center assists countries in Asia and the Pacific region to achieve sustainable development through development of eco efficient water infrastructure
- The center encourages countries to take actions to move towards the eco efficient approach for water infrastructure
- The center encourages countries to participate in the ESCAP’s initiatives (Green Growth) and programs to use natural resources more eco efficiently
- The center conducts the preliminary review on the degree of eco efficiency in national, river basin, city and community levels with objectives of identifying the status, gaps and opportunities in water infrastructure
- The center conducts project, workshops and pilot projects on eco-efficient water infrastructure
- The center produces and provides relevant information and document on eco efficiency approach for water infrastructure including research papers, presentation documents, country reports and articles, etc
- The center encourages partnerships and participation among countries and regional organizations
- The center contributes to the education on eco efficient approach for water infrastructure
